Review a sample: look, feel and test the fit.

This article offers a shared checklist for purchasing, brand and technical teams to review a packaging sample: look, feel and test the fit with the product.

  • Eton / Tretorn lift-off-lid box

A reference sample illustrates an approach. A project sample needs checking against your requirements and the agreed approval scope; the two should not be treated as equivalent.

Identify what the sample represents

First establish whether the sample represents structure, surface, artwork or a complete proposal. Record reference-only elements so unfinished project details are not inadvertently approved.

  • Sample reference, version and review date.
  • Elements under review and elements still to be provided.

Try it with the actual product

Load, close, open and remove the product as intended. If transport or storage testing is needed, agree on conditions and criteria instead of judging performance from appearance.

  • Internal arrangement and product removal.
  • Packing operations and areas needing adjustment.

Consolidate the feedback

Combine purchasing, brand and technical feedback in one record. Identify the location, observed issue and desired change. Agree on the revised version before proceeding.

  • Annotated photographs with clear locations.
  • Final approver and remaining open points.

WHAT TO PREPARE NEXT

Take it into the conversation.

  • Actual product for checking fit
  • Surface and opening criteria
  • Notes, photos and points to adjust

TAKE IT INTO YOUR BRIEF

An attractive sample still needs review against its intended use. A clear approval record provides a shared reference for the next steps.
